Migration Watch UK said Labour's immigration policy under Gordon Brown was Labour's great betrayal.

Net migration total up by a fifth. Immigration to Britain rocketed record high, around 591,000 people flocked to Britain in 2010. It is a searing indictment of Labour's disastrous immigration policies. More than three million migrants came to Britain under the previous Labour government.

Net migration rate rose by 21% last year, with 252,000 more people arriving in the UK than those leaving, the Office for National Statistics has revealed. Immigration 591,000 less emigration 339,000 makes the net migration to equal 252,000.

New figures from the Office for National Statistics and Home Office revealed 25.1 per cent of new-born babies last year had mothers born overseas. In some areas of London the figure is higher - three out of four babies in Newham, East London, have a foreign-born mum.

A staggering 241,000 foreigners were granted permission to settle in the UK last year - the highest number ever. And 195,000 immigrants were given British citizenship, more than double the figure a decade ago. Only 11,388 failed asylum seekers or illegal immigrants were kicked out between April and June, the lowest quarterly figure since records began.

EU citizens account for 25% of arrivals to the UK. The number of Poles in Britain has risen from 75,000 in 2003 to 532,000 in 2010 making Polish the largest non-British nationality in the country.

In 2009, the total for UK net migration had stood at 198,000.

Immigration Minister Damian Green said: "Unlimited migration to UK has placed unacceptable pressure on our public services over the years. The government has pledged to reduce net migration rate to the "tens of thousands" by 2015. As part of that drive, the number of skilled workers from outside the European Economic Area who are allowed migrate into the UK each year is being capped.
